Public transport: Autonomous trains

We have self-driving cars but somehow we don’t have self-driving metros and trains.

Driving a train is an order of magnitude easier than driving a car.

In fact, there are some self-driving trains but the technology they use is by automating all the signalling next to the railway track.

This is the wrong approach, just put Lidars, radars and visual sensors in the front of the train and then use machine learning to replace the train drivers’ function.

This is how self-driving cars work.

This method allows you to upgrade any existing train and metro to a self-driving train at a very low cost.

Use facial recognition to check for valid tickets using regular cameras.

And then just stop the train until everybody has a valid ticket and publish the faces of the people who don’t pay so other people can tell them to get off.

This allows you to get rid of freeriders and you need ZERO staff on the train itself making trains cheap.

You just need policing in the stations, but that’s already the case.
