Ensuring cultural norms don't hinder progress

In the EU we have some very old countries, with very specific cultures. We should analyse each culture to make sure they are not blocking us from moving forward. And if they are, find a solution for them.

For example:

Here in Portugal, we use cobblestone in the sidewalks. Although it is traditional to have them here, they're not very practical sometimes, and in my opinion they should only exist on โ€œhistoric zonesโ€, more for tourism.

  • Old people have trouble walking on them, and sometimes prefer to walk on the road instead (same for disabled people)

  • Sometimes stones get loose and are kicked onto the road (accidentally), or form holes where people trip

  • They are slippery when it rains

  • Ladies have trouble wearing high heels on them

  • They accumulate dirt and plants grow on it

I understand it is part of the culture, and many people would disagree with my opinion, but I think we should all take a second look at some of these traditions and make sure they are not becoming a problem nowadays. And if they are, find solutions, we don't have to erase them completely.
